Books get sick and age just like people. But, like people, they can be “cured” with the help of restoration. The restoration process is divided into several stages.
First, the restorer evaluates the condition of the book, studies what mechanical damage it has. This could be either tears or complete absence of parts of the sheets. The safety of the book is affected by everything: the amount of light, air temperature and humidity, due to which the pages may be susceptible to mold.
After the examination, the old book binding is disassembled and the notebooks of the book block are taken out. If necessary, the restorer strengthens the ink and washes the sheets. The main goal of restoration work is to preserve the book copy in its original form as much as possible. It is for this reason that all chemical effects on the publication are minimized.
Then the sheets are straightened, moistened, and the restoration process begins. One of the most important tasks of the restorer is to select the correct color, density and texture of the paper of the delivered sheet; the match must be extremely precise.
